URBAT 2 is a computer assisted exercise
simulation and procedural training system
located within Copehill Down village
on Salisbury Plain. NSC has supported
software for the British Army at
this facility since 1993.
The URBAT 2 simulation
allows representation of multiple terrain maps ranging in size from
1km x 1km up to 50km x 50km. Within this map representation areas
of high resolution urban terrain can be modelled at individual building
resolution with the capability to model approximately 3000 buildings
on a standard specification Windows PC.
Assets which can be
exercised in the game, each with dedicated booths and computer terminals,
include infantry (normally three or four platoons), company or battlegroup
assets including armour and anti-armour infantry, artillery, recce
and engineering units. Exercises can be run with troops practising
either attack or defence of the target built-up area. For defensive
exercises, users have the facility to set up an obstacle plan, which
can represent mined areas, prepared, booby-trapped and rubbled buildings.
Orders are input to the system through a simple Windows graphical
user interface through which feedback can also be accessed.
The system is designed for ease of use, requiring
minimal specialist support, and is completely configurable. The
software will run on most PC networks, which are typically configured
to provide:
6 terminals representing Infantry Platoons, Tank
Squadrons or Company/Battlegroup assets.
2 terminals for OPFOR and Directing Staff use.
An After-Action Review/ Replay terminal with video
projection facility.
Training packages can be designed to meet individual
requirements but usually last from half a day to two days or more.
A typical two-day training session would run as follows:
Day 1
Initial briefings.
Section commanders and Company assets attend training
brief and gain hands-on experience of using URBAT 2.
Platoon Commanders recce the target terrain and
then prepare an ORBAT and obstacle plan (for defending units).
Day 2
Exercise is conducted.
After-Action Review and debrief by UOW Directing
Staff, Company Commander and exercising Platoon Commanders.
