Under contract to the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD)
NSC is providing the British Army with pre-deployment training
services using the Operational Joint Combat Operations Virtual
Environment (Op JCOVE).
Op JCOVE provides a
collective virtual environment for combat operations, in particular,
for convoy operations to improve response and awareness to threats
in the contemporary operating environment. This includes the ‘visual
clues’ necessary to recognise and react to Improvised Explosive
Devices (IEDs), ambush and suicide attack in convoy operations.
NSC provides the training systems, courses and associated support services to
deploying forces at their home locations in the UK and Germany. An in-theatre
capability is also being provided to give troops the facility to conduct
refresher training and mission specific training in their deployed locations.
The use of virtual simulation allows soldiers to practise Tactics, Techniques
and Procedures that cannot be carried out in a live environment, moreover the
virtual environment may represent equipments, threats and terrains that the
troops are unfamiliar with.
A typical training
session starts with a brief system familiarisation followed by varying levels of
collective training with the complexity of the scenario increasing each time.
The training system can record exactly what happens during each scenario so it
can be replayed for an After Action Review (AAR).
Op JCOVE uses the
Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) first person virtual environment
VBS2 from Bohemia Interactive Australia. As such, this is the first
major UK MoD procurement using commercial games technology and
signals a way forward reusing cost effective commercial technology
rather than bespoke developments.
