JOCASTS (the Joint Operations Command
and Staff Training System) has been
designed to allow the Joint Service Command
and Staff College to conduct all aspects of
maritime operations needed to support the
training needs and objectives of the course.

Maritime units within JOCASTS are represented as individual ships which may be tasked specifically or as part of a larger task group. Units are represented by a set of weapons, sensors and resources appropriate to the platform being modelled.

Naval units typically represented in the model include: aircraft carriers, escorts, submarines, fast patrol boats, auxiliary vessels, amphibious assault ships and STUFT.

The task group representation of maritime assets within JOCASTS allows a realistic command structure to be portrayed and also provides a means of tasking multiple naval units simultaneously. Within the model are a number of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) which provide automatic responses to certain events, such as the presence of an enemy unit in a declared exclusion zone, allowing the flow of the scenario to continue in a realistic manner. Combat occurs through direct tasking of assets or automatically through the SOPs. Naval units are vulnerable to the full range of maritime, land or air launched munitions.

JOCASTS representation of the maritime component includes

  • Units, surface or subsurface defined by hull type, weapon systems, sensors and resources
  • Environment in terms of depth and sonar conditions
  • Maritime missions:
    • amphibious operations
    • evade
    • trail
    • ASW
    • ASuW
    • transit
    • maritime and carrier based air
    • submarine operations
    • mine warfare
    • naval gunfire support
    • submarine/ship launched missiles (TLAM, Harpoon etc.)
  • SOPs for detection of a unit and detection of a hostile act
  • Exclusion zones, territorial and international waters
  • Logistics - consumption, resupply and repair
